Arkham Horror RPG FAQ

  • The Arkham Horror Roleplaying Game is a tabletop RPG published by Chaosium, set in the Arkham Horror universe of cosmic horror and Lovecraftian mystery. Players take on the roles of investigators uncovering dark secrets, while one player acts as the Keeper (game master). It uses a percentile dice system based on Call of Cthulhu.

  • The best entry point is the Arkham Horror RPG: Starter Set — Hungering Abyss, which includes pre-generated investigators, a complete introductory adventure, and simplified rules. For the full experience, the Core Rulebook provides all the rules, lore, and tools needed to run your own campaigns.

  • The Starter Set is self-contained and doesn't require the Core Rulebook. However, standalone adventures like Dreams of Kingsport, Arkham Mysteries, and Terra Antarctica are designed to be used alongside the Core Rulebook.

  • Typically 3–5 players plus a Keeper (GM), though it can be run with fewer players. The Starter Set is designed for a Keeper and 2–4 investigators.

  • They share the same universe, characters, and lore, but are entirely separate products with different mechanics. The RPG is a narrative roleplaying experience, while the Card Game is a cooperative LCG. Fans of one often enjoy the other.

  • The Starter Set is ideal for players new to tabletop RPGs. The Core Rulebook suits experienced players and Keepers looking to run full campaigns. The system is accessible but rewards deep engagement with the lore.
